ERTMS Level 1: Trackside on the ZARAGOZA-HUESCA project

Part of Spain's ambitious programme for an extensive High Speed rail network, the new Zaragoza - Huesca High Speed line is now in commercial service. ALSTOM was fully responsible for this turnkey project, and our participation continues: we are currently supplying and installing trackside equipment for ERTMS Level 1 which will be operational in December 2004.

The Zaragoza - Huesca High Speed line, part of Zaragoza - Huesca -Canfranc line, is connected to the Madrid - Barcelona High Speed line. The Zaragoza - Huesca project allows both cities to be within 30 minutes of each other, and connects Madrid with Huesca in less than 2 hours 30 minutes. There are five stations in the line: Villanueva de Gállego, Zuera, Almudévar, Tardienta and Huesca.

Between Villanueva de Gállego and Tardienta the line is composed of two tracks, one with UIC gauge and the other with Iberian gauge, which are built in parallel with a small distance between them. The UIC and Spanish gauge tracks cross in some places at the same level. The section between Tardienta and Huesca has three rails for mixed traffic (trains with UIC gauge and trains with Spanish national gauge). This section uses axle counters for train detection and identification (Iberian type or UIC type).

An ALSTOM turnkey project

ALSTOM is fully responsible for this turnkey project, and will bring it to successful completion. The contract was awarded in September 2002 by a consortium of ALSTOM (60%) and Revenga Ingenieros (40%).
Due to the installation of 25kV power supply (outside the scope of ALSTOM's contract) in all the tracks including the Iberian gauge track, some of the existing equipment has been modified or substituted to make it compatible with the new high voltage. This includes, from ALSTOM, new interlockings, civil works and technical buildings, and power supply and energy distribution, as well as the supply and installation of cables immune to 25 kV by Revenga.
Additionally, and for all the tracks, a new CTC has been developed under the complete responsibility of ALSTOM, working with Telvent as a subcontractor. This new CTC, located in Zaragoza's El Portillo station, is now in operation.

SMARTLOCKTM interlockings

The electronic interlockings installed are the SMARTLOCK TM 200, also in service elsewhere in Spain. ALSTOM Transport, and its Transport Information Solutions Unit based in Madrid, have a wide experience in this field.
In all, with the interlockings installed in the UIC line, and others installed in the Iberian gauge line and some intermediate locations between too far stations, there are a total of nine equipment installations, each with two vital computers in active stand-by mode.

For the ERTMS trackside Level 1 system, SMARTLOCKTM 200 is installed only in the UIC line, using approximately 30 encoders, 220 fixed Eurobalises and 100 switchable Eurobalises. The encoders are directly controlled by the interlockings, so the information used by the encoder to generate the messages are the routes set by the interlocking and the status of the point machines.
It implies that degraded signal modes never affect the information sent by the encoders, except if the signal presents a red aspect or is completely switched off. All the encoders are installed in the technical buildings as requested by the customer.

New safety features

The new signals include a new blue colored light. Accordingly, there is a new aspect: red + flashing blue. This means that trains running with ERTMS Level 1 can proceed, and other trains that are not equipped with active on-board ERTMS Level 1 systems must stop.
The fixed communication system includes a redundant fiber optic to link all the interlockings in order to allow the block functions among them. This communication is used to exchange information to manage in a safe way the track with two gauges between Tardienta and Huesca, as well as the places where lines of different gauges cross, between Zaragoza and Tardienta.
Especially for this project, ALSTOM has developed a device to control the four point machines installed at each point device. It controls the sequence to move the engines, the current consumed by each one, and gives the status of the complete multi-point machine to the interlocking.

The Zaragoza - Huesca High Speed line is now in commercial operation, with all the systems including CTC working, except the ERTMS trackside Level 1. The ERTMS trackside Level 1 system will enter service in December 2004.

The equipment to be installed and systems to be commissioned include:

  • Interlocking, signals and trackside equipment      by ALSTOM
  • ERTMS trackside Level 1, including ALSTOM encoders and eurobalises
  • Civil works and technical buildings, by ALSTOM
  • Power supply and energy distribution, by ALSTOM
  • Fixed communications supplied by Alcatel as a subcontractor
  • GSM-R voice mobile communications supplied by Siemens as a subcontractor
  • Protected cables supplied and installed by Revenga, our consortium partner
