Interoperability news
Level 1 proves feasible in Luxembourg

The first ERTMS/ETCS trials carried out on CFL lines in Luxembourg - by ALSTOM and ALCATEL respectively - have demonstrated the feasibility of interoperability between two manufacturers. The CFL hopes these efforts will give ERTMS the best chance of being adopted as the main ATP system.

Based on the decision made by the board of the National Railway Company of Luxembourg (SNCFL) the new ERTMS/ETCS system will be implemented on the entire CFL network and on the complete fleet. Both ALSTOM and ALCATEL are working independently according to ERTMS/ETCS specifications to fulfil their missions.

ALSTOM is responsible for providing ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 for the entire CFL existing fleet, around 120 rolling stock units. For Phase One (called "trial phase"), ALSTOM delivered 14 ERTMS sets for three types of vehicles (10 vehicles in all) during 2003 and 2004. Tests and validation follow for one year until March 2005. The three types of vehicles and equipment are:

  • AR2100 DMU single and/or multiple units: 1EVC (European Vital Computer) for 2 cabs
  • LOCO T3000: 1EVC for 2 cabs
  • Z2000 EMU 2-car train: 2 times 1EVC for 1 cab
After a successful closure of Phase One, ALSTOM will supply 132 ERTMS on-board sets for the next 106 vehicles; manufacturing is set for 2005, installation for 2006-2007.
Additionally, 12 new double-deck TER NG trains currently being delivered by ALSTOM's Valenciennes unit have been prepared to receive ETCS equipment in the near future.

ALSTOM, with CFL and ALCATEL, began demonstrating ERTMS interoperability with serial products in December 2003. These first trials were performed on an AR2100 DMU built by ALSTOM's Reichshoffen unit. Results have been very encouraging: a high level of interoperability has been achieved by two totally independent suppliers whose development of the ETCS products are based on UNISIG specifications. While CFL is the ERTMS global systems integrator, ALSTOM has proposed its systems expertise to CFL as a support, for the correct interpretation and implementation of these specifications. Today, the first three AR2100 trains from Phase one have been equipped and are being tested on the line. A limited number of tests were necessary to validate the onboard ETCS configuration supplied by ALSTOM and to adjust the track-side parameterization supplied by CFL and ALCATEL. The most recent trials, performed on May 19, demonstrated that the new ERTMS system?s operability works correctly. Minor adaptations will follow to increase daily operation smoothness.

Latest project news

CFL requested improvements onboard for onboard equipment as the installation of the ETCS display DMI (Driver Machine Interface) in the central area of the driver's desk to increase operating flexibility for the driver. Additionally, automatic switching between the new ETCS on-board equipment and other existing ATP systems(KVB, TBL, MEMOR, BRS) is required. This allows trans-border operations and entry/exit on lines newly-equipped with ETCS during the transient period.

The first T3000 locomotive has been equipped with onboard ETCS; line testing is planned for mid-June. Finally, the Z2000 EMU trains should be equipped by early September 2004 and undergo line testing the same month.
Operation with passengers is expected by the end of this year.
