ALSTOM provides flexible migration towards ERTMS. Specifically, we have drawn on our own rich experience in ETCS to develop our Euro-KVB (Balise speed control) based on ERTMS standards. Its bi-standard equipment integrates both the functions of ERTMS and the French standard KVB. The Euro-KVB has been specially designed for delivery in three possible different configurations: Firstly, standard or stand-alone KVB: autonomous STM with only the KVB mode at first followed by upgrades of the ERTMS functions. Secondly, STM - KVB. Or thirdly, full bi-standard with all the applications of both systems: implementing a "stand-alone" STM, and allowing the STM to fit in any EVC.
This process is part of an optimized migration between signaling and national speed control towards ERTMS.

The EVC (European Vital Computer) is an on-board computer, the veritable brain of the train. There is one EVC per locomotive, or one in each end cab for a an EMU or DMU.

Proven benefits: optimised efficiency, lower cost
ALSTOM's Euro-KVB has numerous benefits: it provides a pre-fitment approach from existing KVB to ETCS; and it reuses existing components, with new development limited to one board, adding no risk; In addition, the Euro-KVB pools the same components in two systems which results in simplified maintenance. This solution provides an overall less costly migration strategy while ensuring interoperability. Of course it is completely compliant with European directives (providing STM).
On new trains, optimization can be reached beyond adding an STM for the migration from existing ATP to ETCS. This makes particular sense when sharing common components such as the antenna or odometers.

Proven experience in ETCS
- Our EVC takes full advantage of our experience with ATB/TBL and other train control systems: more than 1000 in service in Belgium, Hong-Kong, Netherlands and UK and over 2400 ALSTOM EVC on order;
- Our ETCS MMI benefits from the experience of TBL projects in Hong Kong and in the UK (over 200 in service);
- Our ETCS Doppler radar has been tested on all ALSTOM test tracks (France, Italy, Netherlands and UK);
- Our ETCS antenna is similar to that of KVB, the ATC for SNCF (over 7000 in service)
