Innovation

Singapore metro
Today's rail transport operators have two objectives – optimizing the number of trains on their lines and reacting quickly to traffic fluctuations – and they need to achieve both while clearly offering users a safe system. What can ALSTOM do for them? Look at Singapore, for instance, where fully automatic trains run on a new 20-kilometer underground line thanks to a signaling system that constantly monitors and controls metro traffic. Another example is found in Switzerland, where ERTMS, Europe's new generation of systems for rail-traffic management and train control, has been installed for the Swiss Federal Railways. Interoperability among European railway networks is the primary objective for ERTMS.

Europe

Power station
In Europe, where we are developing and enriching the ALSTOM TGV range, particularly with the Duplex (double-deck) and the Jumbo Duplex, we are also addressing issues concerning the distribution of electrical power. For example, ALSTOM has installed Europe’s most innovative power plant in Dunkirk, France. We also built the first combined-cycle power station, so that electricity could be generated from natural gas produced by Gaz de France and from gas created as a by-product by the mills of the steelmaker Acelor.

Queen Mary II
In shipbuilding, ALSTOM is making unique contributions. We're building the Queen Mary 2, the biggest ocean liner of all time, as well as developing a project involving a 400-meter-long, self-propelled artificial island capable of accommodating some 10,000 tourists.

CITADIS in Bordeaux
ALSTOM is truly committed to protection of the environment, notably with respect to satisfying the demands of citizens who seek public transport that not only provides excellent performance but also fully blends in with its urban environment. Here, too, ALSTOM has provided solutions. In Bordeaux, we're installing a catenary-free tram system, based on an innovative solution involving power supply at ground level. We also build trams that are 75 percent recyclable – in the future, they will be 90 percent recyclable. Consumers are increasingly demanding renewable sources of energy, and ALSTOM offers unique solutions that make the best possible use of natural resources. Because citizens demand more energy and less pollution, ALSTOM is developing new solutions and investigating ways of producing energy without adding to the greenhouse effect. We are also developing a trimaran to collect and process oil slicks before they reach the shore.

In the field of energy distribution, ALSTOM offers local service in some 50 countries worldwide. We're committed to satisfying our customers 100 percent and to responding within 12 hours in the case of an incident at a power station. In power distribution, as in transport, ALSTOM constantly works to provide its clients with maximum availability and with equipment with the best performance levels.
