A changing market requires new vehicles
With the regionalization of passenger mass transit in 1996 the Länder have taken on new responsibilities. Aspects of the market economy have come to the fore in today's regional and short-distance traffic. In many Länder, as for example in Lower Saxony, competition has been established which considerably changed market conditions for transport companies and made new demands on vehicles.
ALSTOM's Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, has developed the innovative vehicle family CORADIATM LINTTM for this new market. CORADIA is derived from Greek and means "through the region". It is the brand name of all ALSTOM's regional trains. LINT is an abbreviation for "light innovative suburban railcar". The diesel trains running at a speed of 120 km/h are optimized for operation in regional traffic.
CORADIA LINT gets established
Since the first vehicles were delivered in 2000, CORADIA LINT has established itself as one of the most popular regional trains. Around 260 CORADIA LINT trains have been ordered by private and national transport companies as well as by special-purpose associations in Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. Over 160 vehicles are successfully operated in passenger service and have already covered a mileage of 80 million kilometers, which is about 2,000 times around the earth!
In the meantime, ALSTOM has also adapted the concept for Italy and France. The Italian state railways, Trenitalia has concluded a frame agreement for over 200 CORADIA Minuetto trains which are based on the CORADIA LINT. The state railways of France and Luxembourg have ordered more than 300 trains of the French variant, the regional train A-TER, from ALSTOM.
Availability: 98 percent
The reliability of the CORADIA LINT allows transport companies to offer their customers a high-quality service. The vehicles of the CORADIA LINT family are equipped with proven and reliable components and subsystems and achieve an average availability of up to 98 percent.
Economical service with CORADIA LINT
The operating costs accruing during the whole life cycle of the vehicles are important to transport companies. Besides the non-recurring cost for the acquisition of the vehicle they also include the costs for energy consumption, maintenance and disposal.
Thanks to the modular design, the acquisition and operation cost of CORADIA LINT vehicles are especially economical. Compared with former trains - the purchase price is more affordable,
- the energy consumption could considerably be reduced and
- the standardized assemblies are very maintenance friendly.

Environmentally friendly
Concerning the requirements of environment protection CORADIA LINT is a state-of-the-art vehicle as it can be equipped with the Euro 3 engine. In addition, the light-weight steel construction reduces weight and therefore the energy consumption.
