More and more people move away from city centres where they work and spend their leisure time, to the outskirts. However, direct rail connections to city centres are seldom possible because rail-bound mass transit mostly operates on two separate systems: the urban tramway and the regional railway networks. Both systems have developed differently due to various technical requirements and historical constraints. The connections are less passenger-friendly: frequent changing of trains, long waiting times and large detours - not an attractive alternative to the automobile.
A future-oriented solution is the implementation of a tram-train system. The vehicles of ALSTOM's Regio CITADISTM family allow a quick and direct connection without changing trains. Thanks to their innovative concept, they are able to run on both the urban tramway network and the regional railway network, thus reducing costs by using existing infrastructures. Regio CITADIS is a hybrid variant running on both electrified and non-electrified lines. Its concept opens up cities, suburbs and rural areas; it enlivens town shopping centres and increases the mobility of urban and rural inhabitants.
Up to now, 78 tram-trains of type Regio CITADIS have been ordered from ALSTOM: the cities of Kassel and The Hague, Netherlands, decided in favour of this vehicle.
Design and equipment "à la carte"
Thanks to its flexible basic design, the Regio CITADIS family allows transport authorities to choose from a wide range of design and equipment choices so as to meet their needs and requirements:
- Regio CITADIS can be used as a 'pure' tram and as a tram-train: as a two-system vehicle, as a hybrid vehicle or in combination with future energy sources, such as a flywheel storage system or a fuel cell. The carbodies are always identical, only the traction equipment on the roof changes.
- The front end design and the door arrangement can be changed as desired.
- The outside and inside livery can be chosen so as to reflect the corporate identity of the transport authority.
- Depending on the routes, the cars can be designed as uni-directional or bi-directional cars.
It is also possible to adapt the interior to the individual needs: - Choice of passenger room ventilation or air-conditioning.
- Partition as desired with first and second class compartments or different types of multi-purpose areas.
- Numerous possibilities and modules for the interior: seat design, seat arrangement, tables, folding seats, luggage racks, ticket vending machines, highly sophisticated passenger information systems, video equipment, stanchions, etc.

Passenger friendliness
The Regio CITADIS vehicles combine a modern and attractive design with a highly functional and comfortable concept. Passenger friendliness begins at the entrance: Low and wide vestibules as well as a continuous low floor between the first and the last passenger door allow quick passenger flow and comfortable and safe entry and exit of the passengers - particularly for mobility-impaired people. Bicycles, luggage, wheelchairs and prams - there is room for everything in the spacious multi-purpose areas. The interior of the vehicle is characterized by transparency allowing an excellent view throughout the whole vehicle. The large windows offer an equally good view of the city and of the landscape of the region.
